OU BIG EVENT SET FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 14

by JB Schuelein

Each Spring for more than a decade, OU students and staff participating in the university’s Big Event have converged on Perle Mesta Park to give it a thorough Spring cleaning. The Big Event is a day of community service when OU students volunteer at local non-profit organizations across the entire Oklahoma City metro area. Nearly 6,000 students representing more than 100 campus organizations participated last year, and we look forward to their help again on Saturday morning, April 14th.

Our projects are similar to those required on our own yards at the beginning of the growing season: raking leaves (and thousands of sweet gum balls) and pulling weeds from all the flower beds, curbs and storm drains. We also try to mulch all the trees and give the gazebo a fresh coat of paint. These tasks would take our neighborhood Parks Committee weeks to accomplish but, it will happen in a few hours with the assistance of nearly 60 students from OU.

Please consider joining us for a few hours Saturday morning, April 14. We need volunteers to coordinate and supervise the students with each of our projects. We also need wheelbarrows, shovels and other gardening tools.

If you are unable to help, please consider donating snacks, bottled water or other supplies. There’s nothing that says ‘thanks’ better than a plate of homemade cookies or brownies to share with these students who will give up their Saturday morning to make our neighborhood a better place!

If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact JB Schuelein at 525-2059!

JOIN US AT UPTOWN UNCORKED!

It’s time again for one of Uptown’s favorite parties, Uptown Uncorked. Uptown Uncorked is Uptown’s annual fundraiser. The 2018 event will be held at Tower Theatre on Thursday, March 29th. Hundreds of Uptown friends attend each year to enjoy this all-you-can-eat food and drink event, designated as a top OK food festival by USA Today in 2017.

For our fifth anniversary year, the award-winning Tower Theatre will supply the party vibe. Food is provided by our signature Uptown restaurants. Byron’s Liquor Warehouse returns to provide an extensive selection of beer and wine tastes. Guests will enjoy excellent local craft breweries plus national brands. Every ticketholder has unlimited access to food and drink choices, and COOP Ale Works will supply everyone with a special tasting glass. VIP ticket holders get in one hour early. During the VIP hour, guests receive exclusive beverage pours, access to the VIP balcony, and a swag bag. The event raffle, curated all year by Byron’s, always has fun, quirky options not seen at the typical fundraiser.

The 2018 presenting sponsor is Oklahoma’s Credit Union. Chief Marketing Officer Jennifer Lown explains, “Oklahoma’s Credit Union is happy to support Uptown 23rd’s revitalization efforts. Uptown Uncorked is a marriage of all the things we love about our state: the people, food, and drinks. Spending the evening at Tower Theater is icing on the cake.” Uptown couldn’t agree more, and the association is delighted to partner with a local financial organization that makes community service a top priority.

We invite all our neighbors to attend. Tickets may be purchased through our website, www.uptown23rd.com. VIP tickets are $75, and General Admission is $50. A limited number of VIP tickets is available. Don’t miss the early bird discount on General Admission tickets; the 23% discount gets a $50 ticket for only $38.50. Purchase your tickets soon!
